Abstract

This study evaluated cephalometric ally the changes occurred in the soft-tissue facial profile after rapid maxillary expansion (RME). The sample was composed of 20 children in the mixed dentition phase with narrow maxilla and posterior crossbite, who were treated with a fixed maxillary expander with occlusal splint. Lateral cephalometric radiographs were examined at three moments: pretreatment (T1), post-RME (T2) and after 6 months of retention (T3). Holdaway (1956), Steiner (1962), Ricketts (1968), Legan, Burstone and Conn (1980) and MacNamara (1984) cephalometric methods were used to determine possible changes in the soft-tissue facial profile of the patients. Data were analyzed statistically by ANOVA and Tukey's test (a=0.05).
