Abstract

After researches conducted in two research mentorship projects carried out between 2012 and 2014 (FAPESP Processes: 2012/00219-0 and 2013/ 11531-7), in which we presented an overview of the rubrics from the newspapers Jornal do Commercio, Correio Mercantil and Diario do Rio de Janeiro, we statistically verified a known fact of History of Literature: the newspapers from 19th century are privileged places for circulation of literature. From then on, and also due to evidences suggesting that Jornal do Commercio is the pioneer in the Brazilian publishing market, we chose as the main focus of the present study a quite frequent rubrics in this journal: the advertisement of work of literature and other publications made and marketed by the newspaper typography. We sought, therefore, to extend our view to the circulation not only of literature in the newspaper, but also of the literature in the typography that printed it. We will conduct a survey of these ads from the Jornal do Commercio (images e microfilms), and then we will analyze the collected data in order to understand how the typography of this newspaper established itself as a privileged place for production and circulation of literature and books in the 19th century and also how it contributed to the formation of a literary taste and audience (Bourdieu and Darbel, 2007) at that time, by explaining this movement in details to establish a relationship with the concept of literary system proposed by Antonio Candido in his book Formação da literatura brasileira (1959).
