Expectations of women who will be undergoing mastectomy with immediate Breast Reconstruction: a qualitative clinical study

Abstract

Breast cancer is the type of cancer that more affects the female population in the world, with an estimated risk of 56.09 cases per 100 thousand Brazilian women. Surgical indication, this in most cases, is an excessively mutilating procedure for the majority of women subjected to it. Thus, immediate breast reconstruction, which is the choice to rebuild the breast during your mastectomy surgery, is an alternative to reduce the discomfort and stress associated with the loss of the breast, in addition to being associated with improved psychological well-being and emotional. Objective: Discuss, from the psychological point of view, the reported expectations about the result expected for the scheduled surgery mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction, by women with breast cancer treated at a university hospital in Campinas - Sao Paulo. Method: Qualitative design, particularized in the clinical-qualitative method, using a Semistructured Interview Technique of In-Depth Open Questions. The technique of the theoretic saturation of information delimit the number of patients interviewed when data from the new interviews start to display redundant or minor additions to respond to initial hypotheses. After the explanatory reading and signing of the Informed Consent, the conversation will be recorded and later transcribed in full in an electronic file. Data processing will be through the Content Qualitative Analysis, and it will be composed of fluctuating readings, where will emerge clusters of meanings throughout the material under analysis. Expected results: Understanding how women organize themselves psychologically from the symbolic meanings attributed / referred to their expectations of the treatment and the related life experiences. In this case, about the complex surgical procedure in focus, waiting apply theoretical gains in harmonizing of the language with patients to address the surgery that will come and when it occurred. Then, will be possible improving the relationship of the patient with the outcome of surgery, also getting good adherence to clinical follow-up and balancing a good medical-staff-patient relationship.
