Abstract

The present study focuses on the synthesis and characterization of polymeric nanoparticles through emulsion copolymerization of styrene and VeoVa-10. Different operational conditions and feeding regimes (batch, semi-batch and intermittent) will be studied to obtain latexes with high solids content with properties appropriate for formulations of architectural paints. The effect of reaction temperature, feeding flow profiles, comonomer composition and solids content on the latex properties will be assessed. The overall monomer conversion, copolymer composition and size distribution of the polymer particles will be measured during the experimental runs. The solids content, pH and apparent viscosity of the final latexes and the glass transition temperature (Tg) and minimum film forming temperature (MFFT) of the final copolymer will be evaluated. The best formulations will be used in a commercial paint recipe in order to assess end-use properties of the polymeric films, such as the resistance to water absorption, to weathering and abrasion.
