Abstract

This research project proposes to investigate the experiences of urbanization in the São Paulo´s neighborhood of Santa Ifigênia and Liberdade, between 1886 and 1923. The objective of this piece is to discuss the thesis about the modernization of São Paulo in this period of an economic development. These neighborhoods have been selected to this comparative analysis because they are particular different of the usual imaginary about the urbanization of the paulista capital. They don´t had a straight specialized segregation - the neighborhoods were homes of diferente social classes, and had shops and little workshops. Based on that this project looks to argue how elements related to the space, such as the development of this neighborhoods, the segregation, and the idea of specialized space. These are important to make the ideal of São Paulo´s modernization. This research will related distinct sources, to make it possible to follow, in the best possible way, the multifaceted experience of urban: between the main topics are the autos crimes present in the files of the Tribunal de Justiça de São Paulo and the "ofícios" and croquis of particular works present in the Arquivo Histórico de São Paulo.
