Abstract

Introduction: Temporal lobe epilepsy is the most common epilepsy in tertiary centers. The disease presents worse prognosis when associated with hippocampal sclerosis. Actually it is known that the inflammatory activity is related to some neurologic diseases, including epilepsy. Probably it is associated to the increased neuronal excitability and contributes to brain damage. In 2013, ILAE (International League Against Epilepsy) defined a new classification of hippocampal sclerosis patterns in temporal lobe epilepsy. The relationship between the hippocampal and extra-hippocampal atrophy patterns and de inflammatory markers was not studied yet. Objective: Define the relationship between inflammatory markers and hippocampal and extra-hippocampal atrophy in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Methods: We will study temporal lobe epilepsy patients with or without hippocampal sclerosis, from neurology clinic in University of Campinas Hospital. All of them will be submitted to 3-Tesla Resonance Magnetic Imaging (MRI). The hippocampal volumetry and the sclerosis pattern, with segmentation of the hippocampal subfields, will be processed by Freesurfer software. The extra-hippocampal atrophy pattern will be defined by Voxel Based Morphometry (VBM) analysis. The inflammatory markers included, that were previously collected from patients and health controls, are IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-10, TNF, IFN e IL-17. (AU)
