The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of the probiotics Bifidobacterium animalis subsp.lactis HN019 on ligature-induce periodontitis in rats. 32 rats will be divided into 4 groups: C (control), C-HN019 (control + HN019), PD (periodontal disease) and PD-HN019 (periodontal disease + HN019). Periodontal disease (PD) will be induced with the placement of ligatures around first molars of each animal. The ligatures will be left in the same position during 14 days. In groups HN019, the strain HN019 will be administered orally to the animals for 4 weeks starting 14 days before PD induction. All animals will be euthanized 28 days after the start of the study. The jaws will be resected and microtomographic analysis will be performed in order to evaluate the alveolar bone loss. The data obtained will be subjected to statistical analysis (P < 0.05).
