Effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral motivational intervention among workers with alcohol use related problems

Abstract

Introduction: The consumption of alcohol is considered a major public health problem, causing physical and psychological consequences, which lead to losses in the individual's life, including at work. Work can be a factor that strengthens the mental health of the individual or leaves it vulnerable. Often the worker's occupation may be a risk factor for alcohol consumption. Given the high prevalence of alcohol consumption in the population, there has been increasing demand for assistance, and the public services have not enough resources to cope with this demand. In this sense, a brief group intervention would help in responding to this demand. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral motivational intervention in a group of workers with alcohol related problems. Methods: The following instruments will be used for evaluation of the participants: Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interwiew, Revised Beta Examination (BETA-III), Socio-demographic characterization, The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT), University of Rhode Island Change Assessment (URICA) and Inventory of Drinking Situations (IDS). Data analysis will be performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). The intervention will occur in groups, and there will be two experimental groups and two control groups. To evaluate the effectiveness of the intervention, the instruments AUDIT, URICA and IDS will be applied before and after the intervention in both groups. Thus, we aim to contribute to the expansion of scientific knowledge in this area based on the evaluation of this intervention in workers who have alcohol use related problems, as well as to the development of actions to promote better mental health and treatment for this population.
