3D printing technology application for microfluidic developments

Abstract

Here we will build up a Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) 3D printer foreseeing the direct printing of microchannels for the development of microfluidic devices attached to the project FAPESP 2014/03691-7. The printer assembly will be built in collaboration with Prof. Varlei Rodrigues (IFGW, UNICAMP), who has extensive expertise in this area. The project envisages the possibility of coupling inkjet cartridges for future printing of conducting microelectrodes, without similar in both market and literature up to date. It is innovative from the technological point of view, expanding the borders of microfluidics using the 3D printing technology, integrating form and function to reduce costs, manufacturing steps and time involved in the integration of the created devices, reaching developments that can contribute to printed electronics and lab-on-a-chip platforms. We also intend to exploit admittance spectroscopy to verify the mobility of charge carriers in the self-assembled ultrathin films that will be fabricated onto interdigitated electrodes within the printed microchannels. These ultrathin films will be used as sensing units in an "electronic tongue", which is being adapted to assess correlation of soil samples provided by Prof. S. Paulo Graziano Magalhães and Prof. Lucas Rios do Amaral (FEAGRI, Unicamp). We believe that the mobility of the charge carriers in the nanostructured films will be altered in contact with different liquid systems, which will be checked using admittance spectroscopy measurements for further data mining and correlation of samples, also unprecedented considering variations in charge carrier mobility.
