Abstract

The obstetric brachial plexus palsy (OBPP) is a hypotonic paresis of the upper limb due to a unilateral traction of the brachial plexus during birth leading to weakness of the biceps, deltoid and shoulder external rotators, with possible development of contractures in the internal rotation of the shoulder and flexion of the elbow. These conditions generate limitations on shoulder and elbow range and cause these children to use compensatory patterns to perform reaching activity needed to perform functional tasks. This project has two aims: A) Relate the upper limb function, functional and participation activities and satisfaction and well-being degree in children with OBPP B) Compare compensatory movement patterns of the joint complex of the shoulder and cervical spine during reaching tasks necessary to perform functional tasks among children with OBPP and typically developing children. Will be evaluated 30 children diagnosed with OBPP and 30 typically developing children. To evaluate the function of the upper limb the modified Mallet scale will be used, the quality of life, functional activities related to daily routine will be verified by the Peadiatric Outcomes Data Collection Instrument (PODCI) and the health, satisfaction and well-being degree through the Child Health Questionnaire (CHQ). For three-dimensional analysis of the shoulder joint complex will use the electromagnetic system 3SPACE® Liberty® (Polhemus Inc.). The rest and for three reaching tasks of the upper limb needed to perform functional tasks will be evaluated: put your hand on the highest point of the head, reaching for a ball in the plane above his head and put his hand in his back pocket. There will also be assessed the five positions of the modified Mallet scale: abduction, external rotation, put his hand on the neck, put his hand on high as possible on the spine and put his hand on mouth. The results contribute to the understanding of how the function of the upper limb is related to the activities of participation and degree of satisfaction and well-being of these children. Also, it provides an understanding the biomechanics of the shoulder joint complex and its relation to the cervical spine during reaching tasks. (AU)
