Longevity evaluation of catfish (Osteichthyes, Ariidae) submitted to different enviromental stressors

Abstract

The high occupation close to estuaries are responsible by degradation of these aquatic systems, as well as the abiotic and biological components, for instance, the discharges of domestic and industrial sewage observed into the different sites of the Santos/São Vicente estuary. In recent years it has become common the use of organisms as environmental indicators, in order to analyze the degree of damages by exogenous substances. In this study, changes in the somatic index as well as determination of the longevity of the animals, obtained by the count of the age rings in otoliths will be evaluated on a scale-space-time. These data will be evaluated in association with data previously obtained of biomarkers by ours research group. The material that will be used in the study is part of a sample database of environmental monitoring carried out in 2005, 2006, 2009 and 2014. Catfish (Cathorps spixii and Genidens genidens) were sampled in two estuaries submitted to different anthropogenic effects. Therefore, Cananéia, under low human influence and Santos/São Vicente, known for its history of environmental contamination. Finally, with the obtained data will be made and discussions about the process of chronic exposure of different xenobiotics to which the organisms are exposed in the last years.
