Validation of SAGIC Questionnaire (sleep apnea International Genetics Consortium) in a Brazilian population sample

Abstract

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a highly prevalent condition and is associated with several negative health consequences such as cardiovascular disease, as well as automobile and industrial accidents due to excessive daytime sleepiness. In recent decades, there has been a growing interest in exploring methods to diagnose OSA that present cost-effective. Therefore, the application of alternative measures is necessary to identify people with OSA. Simple and subjective tools are indispensable to identify candidates who require objective evaluation of sleep by polysomnography. Some questionnaires for OSA risk assessment were validated, however, due to factors for OSA, such as ethnic differences and variations in symptoms interfering, further investigation should be done to study in specific populations the effectiveness of subjective assessments. Objective: * To assess the validity and reliability of SAGIC questionnaire in the Brazilian population in a sample of patients with Obstructive Sleep Apnea ( OSA) to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the sleep questionnaire Brazil Study Sleep Apnea International Genetics Consortium (SAGIC ) in a Brazilian sample of São Paulo. Methodology: this project is part of a larger project: international Consortium for Genetics of Sleep Apnea (Sleep Apnea International Genetics Consortium - SAGIC ) . For the validation of this questionnaire, the sample consists of 150 volunteers. The study inclusion criteria are: Both sexes, age e 18 years; Presenting polysomnographic diagnosis for OSA, that is presenting apnea and hypopnea index (AHI ) > 5 obstructive events and/or mixed per hour of sleep . Willingness and ability to provide consent. The exclusion criteria are: Patients with predominantly central apneas in polysomnography ; Patients who do abuse alcohol and / or psychoactive drugs ; Patients with clinical disease , neurological or psychiatric uncompensated ; Individuals with impaired cognitive ability ; Pregnant women ; Patients previously treated OSA p ; Patients with previous inability to complete participation in the study. Individuals that looked for the services of the Sleep Disorders Clinic annually and are submitted to polysomnography , regardless of diagnosis for OSA will be submitted to collection of the following parameters, after signing the Informed Consent: Medical history; Body Mass Index (BMI), waist and hip measurements, neck circumference; blood pressure and heart beats per minute; data held polysomnography; Data on the questionnaire Sleep SAGIC. Statistical analysis: Continuous data will be expressed as mean ± SD, categorical data will be showed through absolute frequency (n) and relative frequency (%). Cronbach's alpha will be calculated and used to measure the internal consistency of the English version of SAGIC questionnaire. Coefficients with values > 0.7 were considered acceptable. The correlation coefficients will be analyzed by Pearson correlation or Spearman to evaluate the coefficients used to evaluate the test and retest. p values < 0.05 are considered statistically significant. Standard statistical software (SPSS, version 19.0, Armonk, NY USA) will be used for data analysis.
