Abstract

The importance of the sleep duration and quality for the health promotion and well-being, as well as impairments caused by sleep disorders, are well evidenced. Population-based studies are scarce and necessary to identify the main sleep-related problems, which are prevalent in the Brazilian population. This project (ISACamp-Sleep) is an offshoot of the Health Survey of Campinas (ISACamp) that will be performed in 2013 and 2014. The ISACamp-Sleep aims to examine the aspects related to the duration, quality and sleep-related problems, especially sleep apnea, somnolence and napping, on a representative sample of the population. One specific module about sleep will be inserted in the ISACamp questionnaire, and will be applied in a probabilistic sample of 3,000 individuals aged 10 years or more. Based on this sample, a subsample will be randomly sorted, totaling 400 individuals aged 20 years or more: 300 of them with complaints related to sleep and 100 non-complainants. All participants from the subsample will undergo polysomnography examinations, actigraphy and they will, also, answer sleep evaluation questionnaires and fill in a sleep diary. The exams and questionnaires will be conducted and applied by trained and supervised interviewers and technicians. Beyond the scientific progress, the results may be a guide to managers, researchers and health professionals to point the main prevalent sleep problems in the population and identify the demographics and social subgroups most vulnerable to these problems.
