Abstract

In this project we propose the systematic study of the band structure and Fermi Surfaceand its relationship with unconventional superconductivity, 4f magnetism and heavyfermions behavior in Ce-based compounds. More specifically, we propose to studyCe2RhIn8 and four doped samples: Ce2RhIn8-xSnx, Ce2RhIn8-xGax, Ce2Rh1-xIrxIn8, Ce2-xLaxRhIn8. The concentration of the doped samples will be chosen in order to decreasethe antiferromagnetic transition temperature from 2.8 K (for the pure compound) to 2.0K. The main objective of the project is to measure the properties of the electronicstructure by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). ARPES isa powerful technique that directly measures the angular dependence of the bandstructure of solids and allows the study of the evolution of the electronic properties andFermi surface of compounds as a function of doping and temperature. In our project, wewill grow single crystals by metallic flux technique. Their physical properties will bemeasured by X-ray powder diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity andspecific heat. Furthermore the stoichiometry will be determined by wavelength dispersivespectroscopy (WDS) technique and a Laue camera will be used to align thesamples to be used in the ARPES experiments. Finally the samples will be measured byARPES technique at the Laboratório Nacional de Luz Síncroton (LNLS) using both aHe lamp discharge that provides photons with 21 eV of energy as well as the PGMLNLSbeamline to perform resonance experiments with a photon incident energy of 121eV. Data analysis of the ARPES procedures will be used with Matlab and Igor software.
