Abstract

The pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common salivary cancer, accounting for about 60% of all tumors in this anatomical site. Although most patients are treated by radical surgical resection, recurrence and malignant transformation to carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) may occur. The CXPA, though relatively rare, reserve a worse prognosis, with the development of the metastases and death. Intense studies have been conducted to identify the biological markers and cytogenetic alterations involving PA and CXPA trying to characterize the tumor and to improve the understanding of tumorigenesis and carcinogenesis of these tumors. A strong correlation has been described between the two neoplasms and HMGA2 protooncogene. Activation of HMGA2 gene is related to the onset and progression of various cancers by regulating chain of other genes. In view of these considerations, the aim of this study is to analyze the expression of HMGA2 protein in PA, residual PA in CXPA and in CXPA (divided according to histological subtype and invasiveness degrees) groups through immunohistochemical reaction. The analysis of HMGA2 expression in these groups will confirm or not this marker as diagnostic of PA and CXPA, as well as the understanding of the involvement of this protein in malignant transformation and tumorigenesis PA, and in the progression of CXPA, as well as their morphological variability.
