Abstract

As countries seek to address future energy requirements in a rapidly growing and changing world, achieving sustainable transportation has emerged as a vital mission. In the last decade, the world debate on climate change and oil's volatile prices incited this centenary topic and, in response, automobile manufacturers' investments in Electric Vehicles (EVs) have rapidly increased. As a result, the development of charging infrastructure is also expected, in order to support the EV owners. Among the main challenges of such development is how to properly allocate charging stations on the network. This is especially true for the Fast Charging Stations (FCSs) since they are a large load, and their technical impacts have not been addressed in detail by researchers yet. Furthermore, in practice, a number of other aspects (in addition to technical impacts) must be taken into account for FCS allocation. In such context, the main objective of this Ph.D. project is to design a complete and robust framework for FCS allocation taking into account not only its technical impacts, but also infrastructure requirements, implementation costs and the EV owner behavior (traffic flow throughout the day) on different network regions (downtown, residential area, shopping malls etc.). The development of this framework is of great interest for the government and for utilities since it will help reducing the barriers for the connection/allocation of FCSs and, consequently, accelerate the uptake of EV technology.
