Abstract

Despite the known benefits, antiretroviral therapy (HAART), used by patients seropositive for HIV, leads to a redistribution of fat and metabolic alterations that increase the risk for development of insulin resistance and consequently diabetes. Therefore, it is essential that such risks are identified early through safe and feasible methods. Goals: To assess the prevalence of insulin resistance in HIV positive patients on ART using HOMA and correlate with body fat distribution measures. Methodology: We will evaluate 260 patients seropositive for HIV on ART. Will be measured circumference measurements (waist, hip and calf) will be the examination of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and calculated the adiposity indices (body mass index and waist-hip ratio) and phase angle. Biochemical tests for fasting blood glucose and insulin will be realized. To evaluate insulin resistance, it is calculated the homeostasis assessment index of insulin resistance (HOMA). Statistical analysis of the variables will be held in an optimal manner, by average, standard deviation, median, quartiles, minimum and maximum. The correlations between variables will be admitted by the coefficients of Pearson and Spearman determinations, depending on the distribution of each variable. Results will be presented accompanied by their respective 95% confidence intervals.
