Abstract

This project refers to the study of the economic dynamic of the South of Minas Gerais, particularly of the city of Pouso Alegre (MG), in the transition from the 19th to the 20th century: a moment of transition towards a capitalist society and in which the country went through a process of modernization. Pouso Alegre developed as one of the main cities of the South of Minas Gerais at this moment, as it had the largest population and was located in a strategic place, which made it a regional provisioning center. However, differently from the path followed by other cities such as Varginha, Guaxupé, Três Pontas, among others, where economic dynamism derived from the expansion of coffee production, in Pouso Alegre provisioning agriculture was the responsible for the constitution and growth of one of the most important regional markets in the South of Minas Gerais.
