Abstract

Smoking is common and most often, it begins in adolescence. Among the various caused systemic changes, the commitment of the cellular repair process is of great importance in understanding the dental-skeletal movements. There is no scientific evidence correlating this habit and their influence on orthodontic / orthopedic treatment, especially with respect to the cellular and molecular analyzes. Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the process of bone remodeling after installation orthopedic forces in smoking rats. Methods: A total of 60 Wistar rats will be divided into 4 groups (n = 15): Negative control [intact suture, smokeless cigarette (FC)], experimental group I (intact and FC suture), experimental group II [rapid maxillary expansion (RME) and without FC] and experimental group III (ERM + FC). Each group will be divided into 3 evaluation periods (n = 5) and the animals of each group sacrificed after 3, 7 and 10 days after orthopedic maxillary expansion. The changes will be evaluated in gene and protein expression of RANK, RANK-L, osteoprotegerin (OPG). The real-time PCR is used to amplify the cDNA of the study of genes, whose results will be analyzed in the Sequence Detection Software vl.3. These data need to be confirmed by the evaluation of protein expression by Western blotting. The results will be grouped according to different groups of study and trial, subjected to analysis of variance and compared by the Student t test. The difference is considered statistically significant at p <0.05.
