Abstract

This project aims to investigate the relationship between the territorialization of the sugarcane agribusiness and the production of vegetables and fruits in the state of São Paulo. The main aim is to verifying the hypothesis that the expansion of sugarcane agribusiness implies the reduction of the area for cultivation of foodstuffs, specifically vegetables and fruits genres, which increases the spatial circuits to which foods are submitted and reduces the possibilities of establishing food sovereignty. The research will take as spatial area the state of São Paulo and as temporal delimitation of the period from 2003 to 2016. We will seek to understand what influences the expansion of the sugarcane agribusiness produces to vegetables and fruit production and, above all, what are the implications of this expansion in mobility of the origins (expansion of spacial circuits to which fruits and vegetables products undergo), which causes the increase in transportation costs, waste and the prices paid by the final consumer. In a context where access to food is brokered by purchasing power, rising prices reflected in a direct way in reducing the purchasing power of families, especially for the poorest. Therefore, the identification of the ways of food allow understand the interests and implications implied the distances traveled by food from the land and the dish. In this sense, based on the concept of food sovereignty understood as the right of peoples to produce according to their practices and cultural habits, food for the supply of nearby sites, this research will investigate the validity of the above hypothesis and, simultaneously, what limits and advancement opportunities for theoretical and conceptual development of food sovereignty.
