Abstract

The flammability issue of textiles used in commercial aircraft passenger cabin is an important part in the planning of safety routines. When an in-flight fire or smoke on board emergency take a place, time becomes critical and all crew must be involved in the solution of the event. As the fire-fighting is part of the crew functions, specifically the flight attendants, this fact directs the study to meet the limits for textile uniform materials with respect to flammability, to meet the legislation, aesthetics and functionality needed for fire-fighting actions safely and efficiently. In the USA, the agency responsible for issuing and maintaining the standards for Aeronautical and Space sector is the Federal Aviation Administration - Department of Transportation. Thus, the regulation "Federal Aviation Regulation (FAR ) part 25 - Airworthiness Standards transport category airplane, Subpart D - Design and Construction § 25853 - Fire Protection - Compartment interior" is pertinent and addresses the reaction properties and fire resistance necessary for a textile material which may form part of aircraft passenger compartment. In Brazil, the regulatory activity for aircraft is made by ANAC - Agência Nacional de Aviação Civil, which adopts in full, in English the same regulation FAR 25. Thus, this study will present some considerations about the flammability characteristics of materials used in textiles of aircraft crew uniforms according USA and Brazilian regulations relevant to the topic.
