Abstract

Quality of life is one of the dimensions discussed in recent times, a major reason is the increase in life expectancy and reduced fertility rate that reflects directly on population aging. The structure and operation of the Brazilian families have undergone major changes and the demand for long-stay institutions has increased. The objective of this study is to assess the association between family relationships and quality of life of the institutionalized elderly. This is a correlational study, cross-sectional, qualitative and quantitative approach. The research will be conducted on a long-stay institution for the elderly (LTCF) in the state of São Paulo. After acceptance participate in the study and signing the Consent and informed, there will be a semi-structured individual interviews with socio-demographic, economic and health information as well as information related to the intensity and quality of family relationships and following the instruments will be applied: Mini Mental State Examination, Geriatric Depression Scale, Quality of Life Scales for Nursing Home Residents (QLS-NHR), family APGAR, Diagram Guard, Tilburg Frailty Indicator and the Fragility of Fried Phenotype. Analyzes will be carried out descriptive and correlation statistics (quantitative data) and content analysis (qualitative data). All ethical principles will be respected under Resolution 466/2012. The project will be submitted to the Ethics Committee for Research on Human Beings of UFSCar. From the results found is expected to characterize the institutionalized elderly and their families, according to the demographic, economic and health; assess cognition, the presence of depressive symptoms and quality of life of institutionalized elderly and compare them with national and international scientific literature; check for correlation between quality of life and family relations of the institutionalized elderly, through the presence and frequency of family visits and the strengthening of family ties; check the strength, quality and proximity of family relationships, from the existence of links between the elderly and their families; disseminate the results obtained in this study of IC in scientific events and through manuscript publication.Keywords: Elderly, Long institution for the aged, quality of life, family relations.
