Abstract

This project is a is an extension of the PhD research project which aims to study the production of heavy-flavor quarks in Pb-Pb and p-Pb collisions in ALICE (A Large Ion Collider Experiment) from CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) in Geneva, Switzerland. Since Pb-Pb collisions produces extreme temperature conditions, we expect the formation of a dense and hot medium, the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP). ALICE also performs control experiments in p-Pb and p-p collision to compare the different systems. Heavy quarks are very interesting as a probe because they are more likely to be produced at the very early stages of the collisions, experiencing the full evolution of the medium. It's very important to study the QGP to understand basic properties of QCD and hadronization. The project will explore the properties of the QGP trough angular correlations between electrons from heavy-flavors and unidentified charged particles. This internship will be at the University of Utrecht located in Utrecht, Netherlands and it was proposed in the PhD project. The main objective is to collaborate with the Utrecht group that also works in ALICE. It is a leading group in the heavy-flavor area and we have a long collaboration with them. The geographical location will also make possible to participate in the data taking of ALICE and also to do technical visits at CERN. (AU)
