Abstract

The research proposes a comparative study between Medellin and Sao Paulo, from an overview of the latest architectural production in these two cities focusing on projects involved in the socio-spatial dynamic of planning. These examples of buildings will be comparatively analyzed in order to review the renewal of the role of architecture in its disciplinary sense, in order to analyze a generation of architects, the architectural culture of their respective contexts and the way it have influenced the different projective approaches in the relationship between architecture and city. Based on the major contemporary challenges involving structuring urban areas, which demand a new participation of architects. This matter will be analyzed through architects' own speech, through their architectural design approach and their relationship with the state. The characteristics and variations between these three aspects are strategically important for answering how the approaches to these challenges are formulated differently in each country. As part of the theoretical research, we intend to launch a retrospective look at the role of the architecture that intends to help structuring the city, from the contemporary developments of modern tradition in Brazil and Colombia. The specific focus of this research aims to contribute to the understanding of the affinities shared by Latin American cities. To investigate the validity of Latin American Architecture as a category and the possibility of being adopted as a criterion of analysis and systematization in research, contributing for the development of a key for our own Brazilian contemporary architecture critics.
