Abstract

Knowing the number of species on Earth is one of the most basic and intriguing questions in science. Unfortunately, 86% of the species are still unknown (i.e., Linnean shortfall) and little is known about the geographical distribution of species already described (i.e., Wallacean shortfall). Aiming to reduce these shortcomings, researchers have published descriptive anuran species lists that occur in certain regions of the country. However, few studies have included a description of the larval stage. One of the main reasons for this discrepancy is the difficulty in identifying tadpoles, mainly in tropical communities that have high species richness. In this project we intend to compile a list containing descriptions of external morphological and oral structure for all species of tadpoles collected in 14 protected areas in the Atlantic Forest of São Paulo.
