Abstract

The present research dedicate itself to a systematic and deep study of the publication of Henry-Russel Hitchcock Latin American Architecture since 1945 - catalogue of the exposition with the same name, accomplished in 1955 on the Museum of Modern Art of New York - trying to understand its historical and historiographical meanings. On one hand, it seeks to understand the exposition and the consequent publication on the scope both with regard on questions raised on the architecture field and the review that the modernism will suffer on the second post-war, as well as wider aspects of political and cultural context. On the other hand, it seeks to understand the argument constructed there and that will be spread out as a vision of Latin-American architecture. Thereby, not only the choices made by the curatorship, but also the current social, historical and political context of MoMA - in respect of its power on dissemination and creation of a new critic about the modern art and its direct connections with the Good Neighborhood Policy underway - become central aspects to the development of the research. The project tries to understand the interests behind the North-American filter on selling the Latin-American art and architecture to the world and for that is necessary to understand the arguments and the architects presented on Hitchcock's catalogue, in the context of its publication.
