Abstract

This proposal intends to deepen the scientific research developed in São Paulo, in Escola da Cidade - Faculdade de Arquitetura e Urbanismo, financed by Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP) since June 2016. The research is dedicated to the systematic study of Henry-Russell Hitchcock's publication Latin American Architecture Since 1945 - catalogue of the exhibition that bears the same name, held in 1955 at the Museum of Modern Art of New York (MoMA) - seeking to understand their historical and historiographical senses. On the one hand, it attempts to understand the exhibition and the publication, in connection to the disciplinary field of architecture and the review that the modernism will suffer in the second post- war, as well as broader aspects of political and cultural nature. On the other hand, it seeks to understand the speeches consolidated in that publication, which would disseminate a north- American vision of Latin American modern architecture. This research period abroad, supervised by Miriam Basilio, Associate Professor of Art History and Museum Studies at New York University, proposes the investigation on the MoMA's archives, in order to examine documents related to the exhibition Latin American Architecture Since 1945. In the searched archives, there are important documents as negative photographs, scripts, posters, slides, internal and external correspondences, photos of the exhibition in New York and in cities in which it was subsequently present. The investigation that will be done during the proposed period abroad seeks to enrich the investigation done so far and to expand the discussion about the transits and interconnected relationships giving rise to construction - certainly political, in many ways - of a particular image of modern architecture in Latin America.
