Abstract

The present master's research project is proposed as a rereading and historiographical analysis regarding the position of Latin America in the emblematic scenario of socio-political rearrangements of the second post-war in the disciplinary field of architecture. The Museum of Modern Art of New York (MoMA), a cultural institution directly related to the US government, in the effort to propose a narrative synthesis of the historiographic canons in the field of modern artistic culture, starts to insert Latin American production in its agenda. The exhibition "Latin American Architecture since 1945", organized by the historian of architecture Henry-Russell Hitchcock at the MoMA, accompanied by the catalog bearing the same name, appears to be one of the fundamental moments in the construction of a particular imaginary of modern Latin American architecture, later spread throughout the world, which will have developments until the present time. On the one hand, the foreigner's view of Latin America can not be studied as an isolated fact, since there are innumerable congruencies between MoMA's intentions with the exposure, images crystallized by its organizer and US foreign policy, especially in the context of the beginning of the Cold War. On the other hand, the historiography of Latin American architecture enshrined in MoMA, repeated so systematically over time, was not written from the perspective of the foreigner only. This research will analyze to what extent the effective participation of the various national and international agents of this construction were given in order to understand the various multilateral vectors that contributed to the formation, diffusion and legitimation of a cultural construction of the concept of modern Latin American architecture within the framework of the ideological and cultural disputes of the Cold War.
