Abstract Using a comparative perspective, this study proposes a sociological investigation about decisive moments in Roberto Schwarz work and in Beatriz Sarlo work; both are major social critic's in Brazil and Argentina. So, the current work is structured in two analytical movements. First of all, looks for rebuild the intellectual trajectory from both critics and systematize their theoretical and methodological principals from which they form their critical projects that articulates, analytically, literature and society, critique and sociology. After verify in what proportion these projects are resemble and what are their aim differences, the second movement will be dedicated to analyses their essays on Machado de Assis and Jorge Luis Borges - "masters in the peripheral of capitalism". Following this second analytical movement, looks for problematize the heuristic potential of the idea of "periphery" to understand Brazilian society (in the view of Schwarz) and Argentinian society (from Sarlo point of view). Asking if a peripheral condition structures certain kind of literature and social interpretation that configures "periphery" as a methodological challenge and, with it, being a way to access for renew and enlarge critical social theory from and by its edge.
