Abstract

This study initially intends to investigate the place Gonçalo M. Tavares' work holds within the portuguese language literary tradition, considering the idea of a path of unreason in 20th-century portuguese literature. Following that, it aims at identifying the parameters of the author function in Tavares' work, taking into account three axes for discussion that are applicable to his writing in general: the subject axis, from which the transversal subjects of the man and the century stem; the epistemological axis, which links the author's intellectual and epistemological knowledges the way they are presented in his Atlas do Corpo e da Imaginação (Atlas of the Body and the Imagination) to his own fiction, seeing fiction as an experimentation zone for these knowledges; and the textual axis, in which there arises a type of writing that is capable of establishing analogic relations between the many fields of knowledge that may be encompassed by literature.
