Abstract

Sedimentary processes are important geological phenomena in evolutional history of continental margins. These processes are controlled by environmental forces from various temporal and spatial scales. Due to the fast increase of anthropogenic activities in marine environments, these studies on sedimentary processes and their consequent deposits are becoming increasingly necessary. In this context, geophysical tools, such as seismic reflection, are efficient to characterize these deposits. Therefore, the present project aims to define and map the types of echo-character on the upper continental margin of the São Paulo state. Secondly, the local sedimentary processes will be interpreted using echo-character distribution. To achieve this objective, shallow seismic data and sediment cores were collected aboard the oceanographic vessel Alpha Crucis on a cruise conducted by the Center for Research Support "Geodynamics of Sedimentary Basins and implications for the exploration potential - GEO-SEDEX" between 20 and 28 February 2013. Integrated interpretation of geophysical data with sedimentological data from surface samples will be used as a basis for study of sedimentary processes in the study area.
