Abstract

This research project proposes a systematic study of the human figure representation in cinema. Considering the film language, the cinematographic "dispositif" and the figurative structure of the filmic image, we intend to infer and analyze different composition modes of the human figure. Our research project makes a counterpoint to the idea of conformation between the treatment given to the body's image and the different states of cinema (primitive, classic, modern and contemporary). We hypothesized the existence of recurring characteristics by which it would be possible to identify patterns of body's figuration - guided by their pictorial aspects, fleshiness modes, types of motion and, in general, by their plasticity - that resonate throughout the history and styles of cinema. To identify these patterns and thus establish or sketch a taxonomy, the project adopts an interdisciplinary perspective by which we intend to investigate how far the nature of cinematographic human figure is inherited from other artistic languages, such as painting and dance.
