Abstract

In recent years, studies have been published on the possible beneficial effects of physiological ketosis. Several diseases such as Epilepsy, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and Metabolic Syndrome, have been shown treatable with ketogenic diets. However, little is known about the effects of ketone bodies alone on metabolic parameters influenced by ketogenic diets. Our project has the intention to test a model of supplementation with ²-hydroxybutyrate salts in rats and analyze some metabolic parameters benefit from ketogenic diets that, in our assumptions may be altered by supplementation of ketone bodies. Repercussions in food intake, body mass and fat body will be investigated, as well as ketonemia, blood glucose, blood cholesterol, triglycerides and adiponectinemia. Still, a more detailed analysis will be performed with samples of visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue, where fat cells are isolated and morphometric parameters analyzed. Finally, the gene expression of adiponectin in adipose tissue will be quantified by real-time RT-PCR. (AU)
