Abstract

The sugarcane is the third most important crop in Brazil, which is currently its largest producer. Therefore, with the undeniable economic importance, it is interesting to know the main diseases that affect this crop to develop ways to combat them. Among the most troubling diseases that cause damage to the cane fields is the Ratoon Stunting Disease- RSD, caused by the bacterium Leifsonia xyli subsp. xyli (Lxx). This disease is difficult to diagnose, since its symptoms, especially thin stems and shortening the internodal regions can easily be confused with those occurring in poor growing conditions. The literature lacks data on the structural changes caused by these bacteria in the plant, which constitutes an obstacle towards the better understanding of this pathosystem. Thus, studies related to this disease become necessary. Structural analysis of the intercalary meristem of the plants infected with Lxx may clarify the cause of the change in development and therefore explain the genesis of the symptom of the disease. Therefore, shoot apex of a susceptible variety, inoculated or not with Lxx, will be processed with usual techniques in plant anatomy. histochemical tests will also be conducted to identify the main chemical groups produced and accumulated in the shoot apex. Statistical analyzes will be conducted to understand the changes in the first internodes formed.
