Abstract

Lithium titanate (Li4Ti5O12, or LTO) with spinel structure can be used as cathode material in lithium batteries, however the presence of residual carbon can result in explosions. There are several wet chemical routes proposed to synthesize LTO, but the oxidant peroxide method (OPM), which uses titanium dioxide nanoparticles with the surface modified with peroxide groups, has some unique advantages, such as the total absence of halides or residual carbons. Moreover, the exothermic decomposition of peroxide groups during the solid state reaction between TiO2 nanoparticles and lithium precursors can generate an additional amount of energy to active the reaction, reducing the temperature necessary to form pure LTO and contribute to overcome the energy barrier, increasing the reaction velocity but keeping the control over the average particle size and size distribution.
