Abstract

The Auxiliador da Industria Nacional, scientific periodical that had been produced and aired by Sociedade Auxiliadora da Indústria Nacional, between the years of 1833 and 1892, came to light with proposals to the insertion of Brazilian nation into the parameters considered civilized in the 19th century, through a discourse about measures to renew the national agriculture and improve the agricultural industry. Assuming that the Brazilian press in the 19th century has performed an important role in the disclosure of Sciences in Brazil, our main goal is to map, in published writings in Auxiliador, the projects of agricultural improvements and building of a Brazilian industrial space, highlighting the proposals of SAIN of replacing slavery by using agriculture machinery since 1850, inquiring about the role of agriculture in this process that aimed at the national industry prosperity. Therefore, the purpose is to understand how these initiatives were produced and presented by an admittedly pedagogical discourse of this Society that engaged in produce a magazine with simple writing and practical studies to be put into practice by its readers. Thus, through the analysis of the documents, statutes, manuals and SAIN's monthly journal, questions of this research are heading in order to seek to grasp what images of a modern Brazil, specifically designed for agriculture, were printed on the pages of journal.
