O Auxiliador da Industria Nacional, a scientific journal produced and disseminated by the Sociedade Auxiliadora da Indústria Nacional (SAIN) from 1833 to 1892, came up with proposals for the insertion of the recent Brazilian nation into the parameters considered civilized in the 19th century. This association, founded in 1827 and active until the early years of the republican period, sought, through different measures, to lay the foundations of the future national industry. The discussions held by the members of SAIN, the classes offered at night schools and the organization of national exhibitions were announced by Auxiliador in the form of articles, essays and translations, announcing useful and practical actions to promote a diversified and renewed agriculture. Based on the assumption that the 19th century Brazilian press played an important role in the dissemination of sciences in the Empire of Brazil, the aim of this dissertation is to learn, in the writings published by the Auxiliador, the projects of agricultural and industry improvement, especially after 1861, when the Sociedade Auxiliadora was then linked with the newly created Ministry of Agriculture, Commerce and Public Works. In other words, by reading the editions of this paper, with more emphasis on those published in the second half of the nineteenth century, we intend to map the criticisms of the members of this association about the methods employed in agriculture at that time, the guidelines for a greater use of the natural sciences and the dissemination of agricultural machinery and tools. From this analysis, we try to understand the role of agriculture and industry in the modern Brazil project sought by SAIN and disseminated in the pages of the Auxiliador. (AU) | |
