Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the degradation characteristics and cytotoxicity of experimental composites in order to obtain materials with optimized physical and mechanical properties for dental application. Experimental composites with different type of photoinitiators (CQ, PPD, BAPO, associated or not with a co-initioator, and associations between them) will be prepared. Polymerization characteristics and mechanical properties of these experimental composites (degree of conversion, crosslinking density, hardness, depth of polymerization, flexural strength, elastic modulus, polymerization shrinkage and shrinkage stress) were previously evaluated (Process fapesp 2011/21934-6). In this stage of the research, it will be determined: water kinetics in these composites, cytotoxicity and degradation characteristics. Water kinetics will be evaluated using a water sorption/solubility test, and the diffusion coefficient (D) and the diffusion flux (J) will be determined. Cytotoxic effects will be evaluated using a trans well test with odontoblast-like cells. Degradation characteristics will be determined by analysing mechanical properties before and after exposure to food simulating liquids and by evaluation of compound leached from materials using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LCMS). All data will be submitted to appropriate statistical analysis at 5% significance.
