Abstract Acknowledging the centrality of some notions of presence to the discussions of performing arts today, this research aims to describe and discuss approaches of presence in the works of three artists: Steve Paxton, Pina Bausch and Kazuo Ohno, assuming that those artists have developed specific elaborations of presence, whose deployments, transits and influences cross over many other works in performing arts till nowadays, in many different contexts.In order to discuss the works of those three artists, it is intended to defend a concept of presence which is based in a paradoxical formulation. Thus, presence will be defined as a way of circumscribing, evoking, aiming the absent. In other words, presence will be thought as actualization and playing with absences, which are, in the case of the researched artists, distinct and have different senses. Finally, the notions of presence developed (paradoxical presence and its different sense in the works of the artists discussed), will be unfolded in discussions on some recent works of different Brazilian artists currently producing. | |
