Abstract

The chief aim of this research is to handle some problems set by NE VI to my master's research. The main concern in my master's research is to examine the concepts of virtue of character and phronesis presented by Aristotle in the Nicomachean Ethics (NE) so as to understand the role played by each of them in the moral action, more precisely, in the delimitation of means and ends. Until now, my investigation has focused on the arguments offered by Aristotle about this issue in the first three books of NE. Nevertheless, a full account of the two concepts should unavoidably include the arguments provided by Aristotle in NE VI, where the concept of phronesis and the relations between virtue of character and phronesis are spelled out in more detail. In virtue of this, I intend to investigate what roles Aristotle ascribes to phronesis along NE VI - considering the previous discussions that I have carried out in the project so far - and if, among them, Aristotle attributes to phronesis the task of providing ends. Another front of this research is to understand the prepositional change made by Aristotle in NE VI.13 and its outcomes to the relation between virtue of character and phronesis in the delimitation of the moral action.
