Abstract

It is notorious that the development of high speeds in highways is the cause of numerous accidents worldwide. In Brazil, especially, the transit imprudence happens to be extremely harmful and fatal. This fact is easily noticeable when we confront Brazilian indexes to the ones from other countries considered developed. For instance, the Brazilian relation between the number of deaths in transit accidents and the total car fleet is ten times higher than the same index calculated in countries such as Switzerland and Sweden and eight times higher than the same index of Japan, Germany and Great-Britain. Therefore, these data endorse the realization of researches that intend to contribute to the road safety in the country. The present research project intends to the study of the relation between driver's perception of road signs and the speed developed by them in the road. For this study, it is proposed the use of gaze tracking system, present in the driving simulator located in Computer Technical Section (STI) of Engineering School of São Carlos of University of São Paulo (EESC-USP), for the study of volunteer drivers' perception of road signs in a simulated stretch of 5 km of the road Régis Bittencourt (BR-116). Driving simulators are tools already widely used for evaluation of the geometric project of roads, of road signs, etc. in many countries. Therefore, the present proposal is a research project that supports road safety, because it intends to the study of the relation between the speed developed by the drivers and their perception of road signs.
