Influence of contamination and of forms cleaning on the bond strength of the resin modified glass ionomer cement in the dentine substrate

Abstract

The resin-modified ionomer glass (RMGIC) has long been used in cervical restorations; however, the success of the restorative procedure relates mainly to the maintenance of a operative area clean and free of moisture. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of contamination of the dentin and the methods usually employed in the cleaning of the substrate on the bond strength obtained in RMGIC interface/dentin. For this purpose, 168 bovine teeth will be selected and will receive standardized class V cavities preparations. Subsequently they will be divided into fourteen groups (n=14), according to the contaminant and cleaning procedure: GI: no contamination, no substrate cleaning; GII: no contamination and cleaning with air/water spray; GIII: no contamination and cleaning with 25% polyacrylic acid; GIV: saliva contamination without cleaning the substrate; GV: contamination with saliva and cleaning with air/water spray; GVI: contamination with saliva and cleaning with polyacrylic acid 25%; GVII: blood contamination without cleaning; GVIII: blood contamination and cleaning with air/water spray; GIX: blood contamination and cleaning with polyacrylic acid 25%; GX: contamination by hemostatic agent, without cleaning the substrate; GXI: contamination by hemostatic agent and cleaning with air/water spray; and GXII: contamination by hemostatic agent and cleaning with 25% polyacrylic acid. All groups will be restored with the encapsulated ionomer glass Riva Light Cure (SDI Limited, Victoria, Australia), following the manufacturer's instructions. After seven days of storage in humidified chamber, the crowns are sectioned perpendicular to the bonding interface. The teeth will be submitted to precision cutter, thus obtaining samples forms of sticks of approximately 1.0 x 1.0mm. The samples will be submitted to microtensile bonding test to evaluate the bonding strength a speed of 0.5 mm/min. Following, a new division will be performed, where half the sticks of each group will be submitted to aging by thermal cycling using 10.000 cycles. Subsequently, the sticks will be analyzed regarding fracture pattern. The microtensile bond strength data will be submitted to appropriate statistical tests. (AU)
