In vitro evaluation of the effect of adding xylitol and calcium glycerophosphate on the microbiological and physical-mechanical properties of a resin-modified glass ionomer cement

Abstract

Dental caries is a multifactorial, biofilm-sugar-dependent disease. The use of calcium-releasing agents and nanoparticles has raised great interest in the optimization of products aimed at controlling the disease, in order to increase their anticarious potential and thus return oral health to the individual. This study aims to evaluate the effect of the incorporation of Xylitol (X) and calcium glycerophosphate (CaGP) in resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RGIC), on the physical-mechanical and microbiological properties. Specimens will be made of each material (n=5): 1) CIVMR without X/CaGP (Control); 2) CIVMR with 5.0% Xylitol (CIVMR+5%X); 3) CIVMR with 10.0% Xylitol (CIVMR+10.0%X); 4) CIVMR with 3.0% calcium glycerophosphate (CIVMR+3.0%CaGP); 5) CIVMR with 5.0% Xylitol and 3.0% CaGP (CIVMR+5.0%X+3.0%CaGP) and 6) CIVMR with 10.0% Xylitol and 3.0% CaGP (CIVMR+10.0%X+3.0%CaGP). Next, the physical-mechanical properties of the CIVMRs: diametrical tensile strength (RTD), compressive strength (CR) and hardness (D) will be evaluated. The antimicrobial activity will be determined through the Streptococcus Mutans adhesion test. For statistical analysis, the values of the physical-mechanical and microbiological tests will be considered as variables (diametrical traction - kgF/cm2, compression - MPa, hardness of the materials - KHN and CFU/mL).
