Abstract

The search for environmentally friendly sample treatment procedures has led to the rise of miniaturized techniques. In methods using this kind of techniques, it is often necessary to handle very small quantities of samples with enhanced precision and reproducibility. Therefore, the implementation of automation strategies is a constant necessity in analytical chemistry. In the ongoing doctoral investigation, off-line automation strategies were previously explored and applied in miniaturized sample treatment procedures. The present project seeks to acquire know-how in the use and implementation of on-line automation strategies, through the development of a system for in-flow coupling of the Single-Drop Microextraction (SDME) sample processing to the separation and analysis by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). This study could pave the way for a future combination of off-line and on-line automation strategies, leading to the development of highly versatile, productive and efficient analytical systems.
