Abstract

Introduction: The incidence of childhood cancer is increasing continuously; and consequently, more children are subjected to treatments such as chemotherapy, which may contribute to the development of mucositis. However, this is a complication that has been underestimated in the pediatric oncology population. The most used way of measuring the degree of mucositis is through scales (objective measures).The Children's International Mucositis Evaluation Scale (ChiMES) is a range of self-evaluation of mucositis aimed on pediatric oncology population, being reliable and valid and easy to apply in children. Objective: To validate the Children's International Mucositis Evaluation Scale for use in the pediatric population of patients undergoing oncologic treatment. Methods: A descriptive, transversal, methodological study, which is going to be held at the Children and Youth Hospital from Barretos Cancer Hospital. The following psychometric properties of the ChiMES will be evaluated - Reliability (internal consistency, test-retest reproducibility), Validity (convergent, responsiveness). There will be included 96 patients between 8-18 years and 96 caregivers of patients between 0-7 years for the proxy version. Expected results: It is expected by the end of the validation process the attainment of a valid and reliable instrument for the mucositis evaluation in the pediatric population, which shall be useful for the clinical practice.
