Abstract

Spiders of the family Philodromidae are ambush hunters, with laterigrade legs, eyes without tubercules, two tarsal claws, well developed scopulae and claw tufts. Although very common in zoological collections, their systematics is poorly known, especially in the Neotropics, and their specimens are usually identified only at family level. Gephyrellula Strand, is a great example. With only two known species, G. violacea (Mello-Leitão) and G. paulistana Soares, it has not been mentioned in the literature since the description of its species, over 70 years ago. Based on these facts, the aim of this project is to review Gephyrellula, redescribing the genus and its species using all available resources of optical and electronic microscopy. Additionally, allotypes for species known from only one sex will be described as well as any new species found in the material available for study. (AU)
