Abstract

Tetragonal zirconia stabilized by yttrium (Y-TZP) is a promising material. However, it presents hydrothermal instability at low temperatures due to the transformation from the metastable tetragonal phase to the monoclinic phase. The transformation may lead to low temperature degradation (LTD) which may compromise the mechanical properties of the material and the long-term reliability of rehabilitations. The aim of this project is to innovate on the synthesis of polycrystalline composites with 85% of alumina reinforced by 15% of conventional zirconia (ZTA - zirconia toughened alumina). The project is designed for the dentistry field which highlights the best characteristics of alumina as well as of zirconia, while offering materials with improved mechanical resistance when compared to alumina, and resistance to LTD. A ZTA composite with conventional zirconia powder will be produced. The biaxial flexural resistance, the fractography and the probability of survival will be characterized.
