Abstract

The religious experience that comes in sixteenth-century Spain was involved by the desire for a more personalized and intimate communion with God, endangering the various ups between divinity and the faithful. In what was the time of the reform, Protestant and Catholic, the Inquisition spared no efforts to demarcate the specifics of Catholicism in the face of insurgent religiousness. The blurred and ambiguous boundary between licit and illicit was expensively established and remained unstable for years. Based upon the theory of confessionalization, we aim to understand the scope of indoctrination and persecution of deviant ways of experiencing the sacred, particularly with regard to the case of Cordoban nun Magdalena de la Cruz. The alleged profligacy of her visions, qualified by the Inquisition as demonic pact index, is the gateway to an approach to the otherness exclusion processes, highlighting the cultural interactions of the period. Our project aims thus to understand the mechanisms by which the Catholic hierarchy tried to implement a regulatory discipline important religious dynamics present in that context. (AU)
