Abstract

In the 19th century, in Brazil, the historical study gains importance, in part, due to the projects of construction of the nation. Thereby, other sciences, sometimes called auxiliaries, also occupy relevant spaces in the discussions of the literates, for instance, in Ethnography. As in the historical knowledge, the ethnographic knowledge would also be used to build a history of the Brazilian nation in the Brazilian Historical and Geographic Institute, known as IHGB. Interested in this question, this research project analyzes the historical and ethnographical knowledges oriented to the delimitation of the black as a study object in Brazil. Therefore, I chose the IHGB as a place of observation by means of its magazine that, published since 1893, had diverse themes, from biographies and maps to studies and historical sources and demonstrated the concern with the integration or exclusion of the "other people" of this national project, including blacks and indigenous as non-historical people. It is important to understand the temporality that these literates designed for the indigenous and blacks, as the demonstrated in Rodrigo Turin's studies, considering the possible political and historical inclusion or exclusion of this "other people" from the nation project. From the publications of the IHGB's magazine, this present project intends to map the speeches about the black, historical and ethnographical, taking as temporal cut from the Dissertation of Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius to the decade of 1930, considering the modifications on the Institution itself during this period due to a variety of circumstances, including the change of the political regime in the end of the 19th century.
