Mating system analysis of Virola surinamensis (Rol.) Warb in amazonic estuary populations

Abstract

Virola surinamensis (Rol.) Warb. (virola) is tree species commonly found in Amazon floodplain areas. In Brazil, natural populations had been intensively exploited in the past two decades, leading to a drastic population reduction. Nowadays, the species is classified as vulnerable and actions aiming its genetic conservation are essential. Although characterized as dioecious, a high level of homozygosity was found in Eastern Amazon remaining populations, possibly as a consequence of anthropic interference. Intending to understanding the high level of inbreeding in these populations, this project aim to evaluate the mating system of twenty-four V. surinamensis seed trees in remaining populations located in three areas (Abaetetuba, Cotijuba e Cametá) in Pará state. Thus, DNA of these seed trees progenies will be genotyped with eight microsatellite markers. The average multilocus outcrossing rate, the single-locus outcrossing rate, the biparental inbreeding rate, the pollen and ovule allele frequencies, and the correlation of outcrossed paternity within progeny arrays will be estimated using the genotypic frequencies. Moreover, the number of pollen donors and the neighborhood size will also be estimated. (AU)
